The Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) provides valuable protection for your family if you die whilst holding a deferred pension. Depending on your circumstances, and the Regulations that were applicable at the point you left pensionable employment, it can provide:
- A lump sum death grant – equal to the current value of your deferred lump sum including any cost of living increases if you left before the 1 April 2008 or 5 times your deferred annual pension if you left on or after the 1 April 2008.
- A survivor’s pension – provided to your spouse or civil partner if you left before the 1 April 2008 or to your spouse, civil partner or co-habiting partner if you left on or after the 1 April 2008.
- A children’s pension – payable to your eligible children.
