Workplace pensions reform legislation has imposed significant new duties on all employers in the UK.
Starting with the largest employers first, from October 2012 certain categories of workers were automatically enrolled in a qualifying pension scheme. Workers are then able to opt out if they choose but will have to be re-enrolled every three years if an eligible jobholder.
Guidance on automatic enrolment can be found on the Pensions Regulator website (along with their timeline action plan and their letter templates) and a guide to how this affects the LGPS can be found on the LGPS Resources website.
The interactions between the LGPS regulations and automatic enrolment rules can be complex. Staff should be contractually enrolled into the LGPS according to the Scheme eligibility rules but with the automatic enrolment legislative requirements following thereafter.
The Local Government Pension Scheme is a qualifying Scheme under Auto Enrolment.
When completing an Auto Enrolment form you may be asked for the scheme’s Pension Scheme Registry number along with the ECON and SCON numbers. Please use the following:
- Cambridgeshire Fund - Pension Scheme Registry Number: 10038487, ECON: E3900002R and SCON: S2700139R
- Northamptonshire Fund - Pension Scheme Registry Number: 10079143, ECON: E3900002R and SCON: S2700161J
You may also be asked for an Establishment Number or a Unique Reference Number. This is your Scheme Employer/Altair number and can be found on your PEN18/monthly return. If you are unsure of your Employer number please contact the Employers Team – 01604 364621.
LGSS have made available to employers a software solution to assist with the automatic enrolment duties, i-Connect. To discuss this please contact the Employers Team.
