How much is the lump sum death grant?
Contributing members
If you’re paying into your LGPS pension when you die, your death grant will be three times your assumed pensionable pay. Log into your online pension account to check the benefit protector or your most recent statement for details.
Deferred members
If you’ve a deferred pension and left the LGPS:
- before 1 April 2008: your lump sum is usually three times your annual deferred pension.
- on or after 1 April 2008: your lump sum is usually five times your annual deferred pension.
Log into your online pension account to review the potential death grant. Check the benefit protector or your most recent statement.
Receiving your pension
If we’re already paying you your pension, a death grant is usually paid in these cases. You left:
- Before 1 April 2008: If you’ve had your pension for less than five years, the death grant is five times your annual pension less what we’ve already paid.
- After 31 March 2008: If you die:
- within 10 years of receiving your pension, and
- you’re under 75
the death grant is 10 times your annual pension (before you swapped any pension for a lump sum), less what’s already been paid. This may vary for parts of your pension related to membership before 1 April 2014.
If you left the LGPS before 1 April 1998, we consider extra factors to decide if a death grant should be paid.
There’s no death grant after you turn 75.
Multiple LGPS pensions
If you die while still paying into your pension and also have a deferred pension or receive another LGPS pension, the death grant will be the higher of:
- The total of any death grants from deferred and paid pensions
- Three times your assumed pensionable pay at your date of death.
