Who can get an LGPS ill health pension?

You may get an ill health pension if:

  • you’ve paid into the LGPS for 2 years or more
  • you’re not able to do your job because of ill health until your normal pension age and
  • you’re not able to work in another paid job straight away.

Your employer must decide if you meet these rules.

Before they make a decision, they must get advice from an independent doctor approved by the Pension Fund.

A paid job means work for 30 hours or more each week for at least one year.

If you leave your job by choice, your pension may become deferred. If this happens, you won’t be able to claim the ill health benefits that may have been paid if you’d been dismissed because of ill health.

If you’ve a deferred pension, see Taking your deferred pension for more information.
