Elected member pension rules

The LGPS is open to:

  • mayors and deputy mayors in England
  • councillors at principal authorities in England
  • London Assembly members

Town and parish councillors can’t join.

Joining isn’t automatic. You must choose to join.

Councillors in England before April 2014

Councillors in England couldn’t join the LGPS between 1 April 2014 and 10 May 2026. If you were already in the LGPS on 31 March 2014, you could stay until the end of that term of office. You couldn’t join the LGPS again in any later term during this time.  See Pre-April 2014 Councillors for more details about the rules before April 2014.
